System Error 5 Fix – How to Resolve System Error 5 on Your PC For Good

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

System error 5 is a common problem on Windows computers, which is typically displayed when using the “NetTime” or “Net View” commands. The problem basically means that your computer’s access to a certain resource/network machine has been denied. In order to regain access, you need to be able to use the steps requires to ensure that your computer has permission & access it needs when trying to perform the tasks you want.

This error normally appears in this way:

  • “System Error 5 has occurred”
  • “Access is denied”

This error is most commonly caused by the “User Account Control” (UAC) system inside Windows computers. This basically determines the level of access that various users have to the features of the computer, and is the main component in use when you have network PCs trying to access your system. There are also a number of other causes of this error, including the likes of the time on your PC being unsynchronized, and having registry errors on your system. To ensure this is not a problem, you should follow the guidance below to resolve the error.

The first step to fixing this error is to change the “LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy” registry key. This registry setting is responsible for accepting / denying access to your computer when network PCs try and connect to it. To change this setting, you can either manually use the RegEdit.exe program, or a registry cleaner tool. If you’re not sure what the “registry” is, then it’s recommended that you use a registry cleaner to fix this error.

After doing that, you should then look to correct any unsynchronized time settings on your PC. It’s often the case that if you try and connect to a network / Internet PC, and it does not have the same time settings as your system, the two computers are not going to be able to communicate properly. You should correct the time settings of your PC by double-clicking the time at the bottom-right of your screen, and then synchronizing it with the Microsoft Time Server. This will ensure the two computers you’re trying to connect have the correct times, and are therefore able to communicate without any problems.

How to Safely Remove the Google Redirect Virus

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

Imagine, one day you enter a search query in Google, find the site you like, but when you click on it you are led to a different website completely unrelated to what you searched for. If you think that this scenario is impossible, think again. What I have just described to you is a rather common thing these days. It is called the Google Redirect Virus. As you can probably tell, this is one of the most annoying viruses out there. The typical symptom of this virus is that when you click on a link to a page in Google (or any of the other search engines), this virus makes you go to a page full of spam that is completely unrelated to your search query. There are different things you can do to get rid of this virus, here some of the most safe and successful.

  1. First try using an anti-virus program. Even if it doesn’t remove the virus, it’ll at least tell you the name of the file which is useful for later steps.
  2. If you haven’t had this problem for long, try using system restore to restore the system to a date before you got the virus, if the version of the virus you got is not too sophisticated.
  3. If nothing else worked, go to “Control Panel”, find a program called “Device Manager”, click on it. Once it opens, click on the “view” button. A drop down menu will appear. Select “Show Hidden Devices”, expand all the devices by clicking on the plus sign to the left of each device. Find the name of the file that was found but not removed by your anti-virus program, and click disable. (Warning: if you are not good with computers I advise against doing this without help from someone who does)

Finally, the best way to be safe from the Google Redirect Virus is to avoid getting one in the first place. This is done by making sure that you download programs from sites that you trust, open e-mails from people you know, and have a good anti-virus program that can not only find and remove existing viruses but can also scan shady websites and e-mails to make sure you don’t get one.

Computer Backup – How Should Home Users Backup Their Data?

Thursday, July 28th, 2011

This is a question that MOST home computer users (Mac or PC) HAVE NOT asked themselves.

How do I backup my computer & What data do I need to backup?

In a business setting there are unlimited options that IT professionals have access to in order to backup up corporate data. Home users have many of those same options, but are completely unnecessary due to the amount of data that home users will be backing up.

When you backup a computer there are many different ways to do it and many files & folders that can be backed up. For this article we are only going to focus on the actually data files (word, excel, mp3’s, jpegs, etc.), and NOT everything else, such as the applications folder, the program files folder etc.

For a home user there is no need to backup everything on your entire hard drive. That will just take up too much time & get too expensive.

I suggest saving all of you data files to 1 spot, if you are a Microsoft Windows user, most software packages default saving your data to the My Documents folder. If you are a Mac user it defaults to only God knows where! Actually it usually defaults to the desktop).

Make a folder & name it something meaningful.

Call it something you will remember, like “Computer Backup” or “My Backup Files” or “Hey Stupid, Back Me Up!”

Next make sure you save all your important files to that folder. I repeat, put any data file in that folder that you work on and wish to save. You can default many of your files to save in that folder so you do not have to worry about clicking & dragging to the folder. If you are truly interested in getting FREE instructions on how to do that, visit one of my 2 sites listed in my bio and contact me through them. I will get back to you ASAP.

Once you have saved all your important files in that one folder, we have to decide how to physically move (copy) that folder off your existing computer hard drive. I have outlined 3 different ways this can be done, in no particular order of importance.

Your first option would be to purchase a USB Key (thumb drive etc, whatever you want to call it). These devices are an extremely cheap form of backup device. Purchase one at your local Best Buy, CompUSA, Radio Shack or online at Amazon. Bring it home, plug it in to your PC (or if you have a Mac, plug it in and pray the Mac recognizes it). The USB Key will be assigned a letter (ie E: ) in My Computer (Windows) or will show up as a mounted drive on the Mac. Open the USB Key up and copy and paste your “Computer Backup” folder to the drive. Once it is done copying, remove it from the computer and you have a safe data backup off of your existing computer hard drive.

Another computer backup idea would be to purchase an external hard drive (fire wire or USB cable) and plug that into your computer. You will need to treat the external hard drive just like the USB Key solution. The only difference is that there is more space available on the external hard drive than the USB Key. You can also purchase an internal hard drive and have it installed or if you are just purchasing a new computer, you can add one for a small amount of money. This will be treated just like your original hard drive, it will have a letter assigned to it (ie C or D) or it will be mounted to your desktop (Macs). The only problem is if your computer crashes you will need to contact an IT Professional or someone who can access that hard drive & reconstruct your OS.

The third idea for a computer backup solution would be to simply burn the data to a CD or DVD. This solution may take a little longer, depending on how much data you are backing up at once. It may also turn out to be the most expensive, of course depending on how many times you backup per month, week, etc.

There are many ways to perform a backup of your data on your home computer. I have outlined the 3 easiest & least expensive solutions for you to try.

You would be surprised how many people have actually never thought of backing up their data on their home computer. While working in the private business sector, supporting residential & commercial clients, I encountered 2 -3 customers per week who lost important files due to not having a proper computer backup plan in place.

Take action now! Save yourself heartache & frustration. Follow one of these three solutions TODAY! If you have more questions please visit one of my sites below or shoot me an email.

Good Luck.

Recovering Data From a Broken Hard Drive

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

Death of a hard drive can be very heartening at times. You can lose all your pictures, music and documents that way. As long as the files are not corrupted on your drive, they can be safely recovered. There are no guarantees that you will always rescue each and everything from the broken drive.

1. Before you open the computer case, remember to unplug the computer from main power supply. Remove other electrical appliances if they are placed close to the CPU cabinet.

2. Rubbing your hands against the metal can save your drive from possible static electricity flow. Choose a cabinet paneling that is easiest to open. You should also consider the side of cabinet that is suitable for detaching the hard drive.

3. You will have to use special screw drivers to open the small screws that attach the drive to your computer.

4. Disconnect IDE and power cables connected to your hard drive. Thick sized cable is IDE and it carries data and control signals to and from the central processing unit. Place the hard drive on an insulated surface. There should be no electric or magnetic charge.

5. Carefully look along the IDE cable connected to your hard drive and find the unused connector. Gently plug your drive into the unused connector. These unused connectors are similar to power connectors of a computer that is no longer in use. Use a book or something else to mount the hard disk. Don’t let your hard disk hang down from the motherboard with cables.

6. Remove jumper from the drive. Now your drive will work as a ’slave.’

7. Start your computer with another drive in the master slot. You will see the new hard drive in my computer. Completely scan the drive before you copy your data.

Dual Monitor Video Cards

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Dual monitor video cards allow one computer to use two monitors simultaneously without having to add a second video card in order to run the second monitor. There are many benefits to using a dual monitor setup, mostly related to workplace use and productivity, but can also extend toward certain aspects of gaming. Luckily, the modern market has plenty to choose from.

In the past, dual monitor video cards were priced significantly higher than those that only allowed for a single connection, frequently costing more than $100. In recent years, these cards have become the standard and can be found at a very reasonable price. Some retailers even offer video cards that support two monitors for as little as $20.

The advantages of dual monitor graphics cards primarily lie at the productivity end of the computer use spectrum. Having an additional monitor provides you with extra screen space, allowing you to be able to view much more at once than you would be able to with a single display. For example, let’s say that you are the office manager or accountant for a company and frequently need to switch between a work order and your accounting software. Having a second monitor allows you to view both simultaneously and switch between them at a glance instead of having to move from one program to the other.

That is not to say that the benefits of a dual display are limited only to working, however. There have been many creative uses of multi-display setups for video games, such as a flight simulator that allows you to have the forward, port, and starbird views displayed simultaneously, one on each monitor.

Still, despite the benefits that dual monitor video cards have to offer, they do still have their drawbacks as well. When one video card is running more than one display, the resources that that card has to offer are going to have to be enough to operate both displays simultaneously. Now, if all that you are doing is office work, web browsing, or other activities that do not require a lot of video power, you are going to be just fine. If, however, you are going to be gaming, you will need a more powerful graphics card in order to compensate.

There may also be problems that occur when the software being used does not understand how to use multi-monitor setups or if, such as in a game, the software uses full-screen mode and the user scrolls the mouse off the edge of the display or clicks on the secondary display. Still, these problems will not be significant for many applications.

As you can see, there are many different benefits to using dual monitor video cards. From productivity to gaming, the applications are wide and varied, and those options can become available for a very reasonable price. The next time you install a new video card in your computer, consider using a dual monitor video card. You may be glad you did.

2 Things to Look For in the Best Registry Cleaner

Saturday, July 23rd, 2011

If you’re interested in using a registry cleaner to speed up your computer or fix a particular problem, then you may have already seen all the different websites claiming to have the “best” cleaner. Seeing this level of choice can be confusing but fortunately, there’s an easy way to pick the best registry tool even if you know nothing about computers. The most important thing you must know is that all registry cleaners are designed to do the same job. They all clean through the ‘registry’ which is the database that Windows uses to store all the settings on your PC. You need the cleaner which can do its job in the most effective way possible. And that can be found with 2 distinct features:

1) An effective scanner – all registry cleaners work by scanning your computer and then fixing any files / settings that they find to be damaged & causing problems. This means that the most effective cleaners will be the ones which can scan more files and fix the largest number & variety of issues inside your PC. This feature is normally seen with the number of categories that the cleaner can scan. The best tools have 10-14 errors they can fix, and it’s these which will do the most good for your PC.

2) An updated program – Many registry tools are created by amateur coders who don’t have the skills or knowledge to continually keep their systems ahead of all the potential errors that can develop. You need to use a program that is kept updated so that you can rely on it to work with all your latest software, and fix all the latest issues on your PC. The best way to see if a cleaner is kept updated regularly is to look at the company who develops it. If they are a transparent & open company, who reveals what they do, then you can count on the cleaner constantly being updated.

When you’re looking for a tool, you should always keep your eyes open for these two aspects. These are the core features which are essential in the best registry cleaner. Obviously, other features do make a difference as well, such as the presence of a junk file cleaner, a backup facility and any other useful features. It’s important to look for a registry tool by first looking at recommendations & reviews and then deciding whether the cleaners you’ve found are able to clean your system in the best way.

We’ve used a lot of registry cleaners and have found that there’s a new tool just launched called “Frontline Registry Cleaner” which is extremely effective. It has been created by a large software development company called ‘Frontline Utilities’, who are based in England; and have created their registry cleaner to find & fix the most registry errors, as well as fix any junk files that are on your PC as well.

How to Change Canon Printer Ink Cartridges

Friday, July 22nd, 2011

It is not that difficult to change the printer ink cartridges in a Canon printer. All you need to do is to ensure that you are buying the right ink for the particular model of your Canon printer. You have the option of getting the original Canon-branded inks or the cheaper compatible inks available from third-party suppliers.

Whatever type of printer ink cartridges that you get for your Canon printer, here are the step-by-step instructions for replacing these cartridges into the printer.

1. Access the cartridges. The first step that you need to do is to remove the empty printer ink cartridges from your Canon printer. You do this by turning your printer on and then lifting the access lid. When you lift the lid, your printer will move the Canon printer cartridges right to the center automatically. Without replacing the lid, unplug the printer’s power cable so that you will not have to experience electric shocks as you change the printer ink cartridges.

2. Replace the cartridges. Once you have unplugged your printer and minimized the risk for shock, you should take the empty printer ink cartridges out of their cradle. To do this, you need to press down gently on the cartridge house. This will cause the cartridge to be lifted and loosened from the cradle. Pull the empty cartridge out and set them aside.

3. Put in the new cartridges. Take your new printer ink cartridges out of their packaging and then pull the orange tape off each cartridge. These orange tapes are the safety tapes and are supposed to prevent the printer ink from leaking out of the printer cartridge. Try not to touch the chips on the cartridge so that your printer can easily recognize the cartridges. Just put the new cartridge into the cradle with the chip facing the printer head.

4. Align the cartridges. After you have replaced the cartridges, the next step would be to align it. Pull the lid of your printer back down and plug it. And then, turn the printer on. Afterwords, access the Canon printer maintenance software from your computer. On the maintenance application, choose the “Clean and Align” option from the Print Properties menu. Before you press OK, make sure that you have a few sheets of paper in your printer’s tray. The printer will then print a few pages; after it is done, it will pop up a message on your screen that confirms that the printer cartridges have been aligned.

It is not that difficult to replace the printer ink cartridges in a Canon printer. Just make sure that you have the right tools – your cartridges and your sheets of paper – ready before you undertake this task. Do not hesitate to use replacement ink cartridges or refill ink if you feel that original branded inks are too expensive or cost-inefficient for you. Just make sure that you follow the instructions included on the replacement or refill inks to make sure that your printer will recognize them without any hassles.

Gaming Desktop Computers – Best Gaming PC

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

Gaming desktop computers are built to process the huge amounts of information available while playing massive role-playing games or first-person shooters, especially while online. These games contain incredible detail and often require quick reactions. A gamer is only as good as the computer on these games, and the difference between success and failure could lie in whether a computer lags a second or two behind. Many of these computers use liquid cooling technology.

Gaming desktop computers are also built to conveniently handle all the peripheral devices that go along with those games, including ports for joysticks, steering wheels and any other devices. They are also built with more style and portability than normal computers.

Some of the cheapest gaming desktop computers are those that are built specifically by the person who will be playing them. Often a gaming PC just as powerful can be found for the same amount of money.

The other option is to purchase a specific gaming computer that has been built for that purpose. A cheap gaming desktop can be had for around $1,500, while others can run as much $8,000.

Regardless of which option is used, there are a few things the buyer should keep in mind. A fast central processing unit (CPU) will help prevent the lag that can occur during massive online role-playing games. Some of the best gaming PC units will contain dual or quad core processors for those indulging in extreme gaming experiences.

Memory is also important for successful PC gaming. A large amount of memory is necessary to allow the gaming computer to quickly access programs it uses on a regular basis. The best gaming desktop PC will have at least two gigabytes of RAM memory and could have up to eight gigabytes.

Many computer games have realistic-looking graphics, but without a high end graphics card the images will not look nearly as good as they were intended. Graphics cards often can be upgraded.

With a desktop gaming computer, the whole package is important. A fast central processing unit and lots of memory will not be enough if the graphics card is below par.

Investing in a good desktop gaming computer can mean the difference between life and death in the often realistic and complex world of online gaming.

How Do I Transfer Data From One Part of the Computer to Another?

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

This is a tough subject to talk about mainly because there are so many ways to do it.

Transferring is similar to moving. If you move a file or directory (also call a folder) it will no longer be in its old location. If you transfer a file or directory you may possibly keep a copy of it in its original location.

As an example: when you use FTP (file transfer protocol) you copy the files from the local drive and put on the server. You do not move them.

What about copying?

Of course this is an option. You can copy almost anything and put it where ever you want to. The problem is that you will be leaving the original files were they were. This can be good or bad. If you did not want the files to stay there you will need to go back and delete them. This can be a long process. You also must be sure that you pick the right files to delete.

o You can left click one file in the folder you are in. If you want to copy everything just push the Ctrl key along with the letter A. This will select every file in that directory. Now (while the files are selected) push the Ctrl key with the letter C. This will copy all the files.

o Go to the place on the computer that you want to copy them to. Push the Ctrl key with the letter V. This will copy all the files in that location.

o Another way: when you are in the folder you want to copy click the file in the upper left hand corner. Hold down the shift key and pick the file in the lower right corner. Now follow the steps as shown above.

What if I do not want every file?

Click the first file you want to copy. Hole down the Ctrl key. Now pick out the files you want to copy. You must hold down the Ctrl key as you do this or you will have to start over. Once you have selected the files you need follow the instructions shown above.

Yet another way

Select the file any way you like as suggested above. Once the files are selected right click and drag the files to the location you want to put them in. Let go of the mouse and a screen will appear. It will say: Copy here, move here, create shortcut or cancel. Pick the one of your choice. You can also left click and drag but it will actually move the file. In that case it will not warn you.

There are a few other ways this can be done but it is difficult to write about without using pictures.
